Tuberculosis(TB) is transmitted through air from one to another by a bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. To effectively control TB infections in congregate settings such as educational facilities, clinics/hospitals, military/police units, correctional facilities, shelters, workplaces, rapid contact investigations of infectious TB cases are required. According to the enhanced national tuberculosis control program of Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(KCDC), the number of contact investigations markedly increased from 13 in 2004 to 3,502 in 2016. Of the 3,502 contact investigations conducted in 2016, a total of additional 202 TB patients and 12,707 people with latent TB infections were identified. The KCDC is striving for the development of science-based tuberculosis policy through in-depth analysis on accumulated contact investigation data.
